What is here, and what is not
Six publications of one political current. Socialist Viewpoint and International merged in May 1987 to form Socialist Outlook, which ran as a magazine, then a fortnightly tabloid, then a monthly, until August 2002 — where Socialist Resistance begins.
Not yet in: the printed tabloid of 1991–96 and the scanned pages of 1997–2002, which are held but not yet cut into articles; Liberation; Theory and Practice; and the booklets. The scans exist for all of them.
Where the text comes from, and how far to trust it
Three kinds, and the difference matters:
- The paper's own web pages, for most of the 1997–2002 monthly. Clean text, no scanner errors.
- Read from the printed page by machine, for International, the magazine and Socialist Viewpoint. Accurate enough to read and to search, but it carries scanner errors, and headlines and captions are the worst of it. Quote from the scan, not from here.
- Read by eye, for the contents pages and many bylines. Where an article was placed by its printed page number rather than found in the text, the article says so.
Roughly a third of articles carry an author. That is a fact about the papers as much as about the archive: Socialist Viewpoint never printed authors on its contents page, and much of a newspaper is unsigned.
